Let’s talk about… timely investment

So, part of building a business is knowing what to invest in and when. Over the last year or so I’ve moved through the phases of branding, developing an online presence, purchasing camera equipment, and most recently renting and renovating the studio space.

I’m almost in a place where I have all I need for the platform required to really take off. Of course there’s always ‘more’, but in terms of the core stuff, I’m not far off.

This particular purchase took a lot of consideration, especially when I’m only just starting to earn from Atom work.

I’ve bought a Canon 1Dx Mark i. For those into their photography, you’ll know that Canon are now on Mark iii of this flagship beast, but there was one reason I made this move... frames per second (fps)

Now, I love (LOVE) my Canon 5D Mark iv, I’ve used it a lot as I’ve learned more and more about photographing bikes and riders, but at 7 fps when another camera does 12-14 fps, I knew there were gains to be made.

There are trade offs, mainly the picture resolution, but I’ll still be using the 5D mk iv, so I have the option of this and the 4k video when needed.

I also realise that many are making the switch over to mirrorless now that the systems are so much more advanced. But the cost and my love for the SLR camera meant that I’m not yet looking down that path.

Also, because so many people are selling their top-end DSLRs to invest in mirrorless, there are some really good deals to be had! I picked up a 1Dx in mint condition, with just 39k actuations - on a shutter that is good for 400k!

The latest addition to my camera set up

The latest addition to my camera set up

I’ve only taken it out once since getting it yesterday, and there’s no doubt that the fps rate is insane, the speed combined with the accuracy of the autofocus will no doubt help me as I continue to experiment and learn as a student of this awesome craft

Looking forward to testing this out more in the coming weeks, and to nailing some great shots of bike racing as soon as restrictions allow!
